Disport - Self Generated White
Noise Machine (2000).

Plexigless shell, motors, speakers, scanners and synthesizer. 2 1/2 x 3 1/2’ Disport was the end product of a semi private performance where I invited five male industrial and mechanical engineers to help me make a machine which would scan a pixelated image of my skin, and interpret each pixel color as sound - so that I would be “played” through the machine- becoming simultaneously “played” and a “player”. I gave each engineer a drawing of what I imagined the end result to look like - a small ipod like mp3 type machine which would show the image of my skin scrolling through the face. The process involved clashes of ego, one theft of project funds, and a kind of soap box derby garage tinkering. The end result was a bulky, retro-styled machine, which initially worked only sporatically, but eventually produced a smooth undulating wave noise.

Prototype sheet music for disport which was run through a player piano. One 11” x 8 1/2” digital print of pixelated, scanned skin. One pixel color was extracted from each sheet of “music” and then run through a player piano. This sheet is from a series of five.
